Ondo election: Tension as residents get set to elect new government

Despite the call for postponement by some of the parties, 28 political parties are set to feature governorship candidates in the election which many expect to be a four-horse race.

Eyitayo Jegede of the state’s ruling PDP, Rotimi Akeredolu of Nigeria’s ruling APC, Olusola Oke of the AD and Olu Agunloye of the SDP are the main challengers.‎

According to the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Olusegun Agbaje, all the sensitive and non-sensitive materials are on ground for the election.

Agbaje said: “Ad-hoc staff have been trained, stakeholders have been sensitized and security has been mobilized.”

Exactly 1,280,580 voters are expected to decide who the next governor of Ondo state will be.

1.15pm’ As voting ends in most polling units in Ondo Town visited by our reporter, some hoodlums have been arrested by security agents at Igbokoda, Ilaje, for allegedly snatching ballot boxes.

Police officials said the hoodlums were chased from interior communities to the Igbokoda jetty where they were arrested.‎

1.11pm’ At PU: 28/05/09/002 Oba-Ile Akure North Voters are being served snacks by some party agents to influence voting decisions.

12:54pm’ Voting is still ongoing peacefully at Unit 7, ward 1 omoniyi Ondo west LGA.

The party agent‎ of the APC, Mr Enimade Joseph who spoke with our report said at this polling unit said hoodlums had attacked someone believed to be working for politicians.
“Some hoodlums had earlier stormed this polling unit and attacked someone and took money from the person. But the police came in and arrested the hoodlums,” he said.

12.10pm’ At Ward 11, Unit 1, Funmbi Fagun junction Ondo west LGA, election is still on going with a massive turnout of voters.

Unusually, food and drinks are being served food and drinks. Also, money induced voting was witnessed at this polling unit.

12.07pm’ At PU28/12/05/002, Iyansan/Omi, Irele APC agent have reportedly engaged in vote buying. Also in PU28/06/04/006, Ijomu/Obanla, Akure South, APC party agents are engaging in vote buying but police have intervened.

12.05pm’ At PU014 Okeraye/Aye Rd. Okitipupa1. Failure of card reader, no backups, 23 incidences registered. Others unregistered

12pm’ At Ward 01 PU 002. All present have voted. INEC officials are idle, waiting for the 2pm poll closing time to count votes. Counting of votes will commence across all centres at exactly 2pm.

11.55am’ At PU 28/04/12/007 accreditation and voting ongoing simultaneously at Ibaka/Akungba/Akoko South West.

11.53am’ At PU28/01/04/005, Ikado II, Akoko North East. Card Reader has stopped working at the Polling Unit.

11.50am’ Some men were arrested at PU28/16/11/002, Okelisa Okedoko/Ogbodu, Ondo West, trying to disrupt the process.

11.47am’ Some angry voters in Ondo state have heatedly rejected an attempt by an APC chieftain to induce them to vote for his party in the on-going Ondo election. The party chieftain is Tunji Light Ariyo.
