Rivers rerun poll: 3 die as Amaechi misses out on voting exercise

According to the report, while two people were killed in Tai and in Gokana local government areas respectively, a youth believed to be a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was allegedly killed at ward 3, Mgbuitanwo community in Emohua LGA.

One of the supporters who was injured Abiola Ohele is receiving treatment at a health facility in the area.

Speaking to Vanguard at the hospital, the younger brother to the victim, Samuel Ohale said: “The person lying critically injured here is my elder brother, Abiola Ohale. We were just waiting at our polling unit, unit 8, ward, the material has not arrived yet, when some boys came even in the presence of police men.

“The boys are from here but they are not registered at this pulling unit. When they came they started making problem. They used stick and hit my brothers head.”

However, the election recorded heavy turnout of voters but could not hold in some areas over cases of hijacked ballot boxes and violence.

It was gathered that Rotimi Amaechi, the minister of transportation, could not vote for his desired candidate in Saturday’s re-run election in Rivers state due to the disappearance of result sheet from his unit at Ubima, ward 8, unit 14, Ikwerre LGA.

Voting was also stalled in five units in the local government as a result of no original result sheet.

Following the disappearance of the result sheet, youths who were aggrieved ordered the arrested the Presiding Officer (PO) in charge of Amaechi’s unit, Siminore Oshinokho, and handed him over to the military.

The Supervisory Presiding Officer in the area, Lasisi Rhino said that the PO had signed and collected the original results sheet for unit but wondered why it was not insight.

On his part, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, the director general of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASSA) confirmed that electoral material meant for one ward was hijacked by thugs quickly.

He said that the materials were later recovered from the hoodlum security personnel in the area.

Peterside who spoke after visiting that area said: “Opobo/Nkoro is peace generally now. We observed that they imported some people from outside the LGA. Election for one unit was hijacked by some boys, but the security agencies have recovered it. Materials have arrived and election is going orderly. The election was peaceful.”
