Former Oyo SSG escapes death asgunmen invade Olubadan’s palace



Unknown gunmen launched a brazen attack on the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadan, in Popo-yemoja, Oyo state, on Monday September 25, Premium Times reports.

The gunmen reportedly stormed the palace at 11:45am in a black Sienna, as the monarch, Oba Saliu Adetunji, was slated to install four (baales) local chiefs.

We gathers that a former Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Sharrafaden Ali, who was there to attend the event, narrowly escaped death, alongside 3 journalists.

The former SSG was seated in his vehicle- a black Toyota Land Cruiser jeep- when the shooting began; and eyewitnesses disclosed that his screen was riddled with bullets.

The gunmen reportedly hurled insults inYoruba, as they opened fire in front of the palace and challenged those inside to come out and face them.

In recent times, there has been animosity between the Olubadan and Governor Abiola Ajimobi, over the chieftaincy review process; with the monarch even suing the Oyo state governor over what he referred to as the‘illegality of the chieftaincy review of Ibadan land’.

We previously reported that Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state issued a48-hour ultimatum to nine elevated chiefs in Ibadanto revert to their former status.

The Oyo state government described the promotion of the nine chiefs by the previous Olubadan of Ibadan, as illegal.
