How we beat Chelsea to signing Lukaku – Jose Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho insists that it was not his ownpersonal influence that brought RomeluLukaku to Manchester United but because they played the right cards in the negotiation process.

The Belgian international made a big money £75m move to Manchester United this summer, despite being linked with a return to Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho, who had previously worked with the 24-year-old at Stamford Bridge, dismissed that their relationship had any sort of influence on the transfer, and that Chelsea simply didn’t meet the asking price for the player.

“I don’t think it was my influence, no,”said Mourinho.“I think that we paid the money that Everton asked for and we paid the player the wages that his agentasked for and we paid the agents the commission that they asked for.

“I don’t see another reason.”It’s a thinly-veiled jibe at his former London employers among many, potentially hinting at Chelsea boss Antonio Conte’s frustration during this summer’s transfer window. It was reported that the Blues gaffer wanted tosign Lukaku as a potential replacement for the wayward Diego Costa.

The big front man has been prolific for his new side this season, already scoring six goals in as many appearances for United and creating seven chances. The Red Devils currently sit second in the league table, unbeaten after four games.

It was thought that Lukaku’s hefty £75mprice tag was a gamble, but the Belgian has quickly proved his worth.
