Bayern Munich against Real Madrid, our best Champions League performance since 5 years – Rummenigge

Bayern Munich CEO, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, has stated that the club produced their best Champions League performance since five years in Tuesday’s second leg semi-final clash with Real Madrid.

Bayern travelled to Spanish capital trailing 2-1 from the first leg at home.
Joshua Kimmich put them in front at the Santiago Bernabeu, before Karim Benzema scored a brace. James Rodriguez’s equalizer was not enough to take Bayern through to the finals of the competition.

A 2-2 draw in the second leg meant Jupp Heynckes’s men were one goal shy of reaching the final as Madrid went through 4-3 on aggregate.

Rummenigge feels that, despite being dumped out from the Champions League by Zinedine Zidane’s men, the Bundesliga champions performance against the Los Blancos was ‘the best advert for football’.

The Bavarians CEO was deeply impressed with the players’ efforts and believes they deserve some respect.
“We saw the best match in the Champions League that I have experienced in the last five years with Bayern Munich,” Rummenigge told the post-match banquet at the team’s hotel.
“We all agree we had the best team on the brink – Real Madrid are currently number one in UEFA’s ranking. We played with great fight, incredible passion and courage.

“We’re all a bit sad because it was possible to bring the great Real Madrid into the abyss. We drew 2-2, you did a great job. It was the best advert for football.

“I believe not just Bayern but all of Germany and the football world will pay our team, head coach Jupp Heynckes and his coaching team the greatest respect.”

Jupp Heynckes’s men will now turn their attention to the close of the domestic German topflight league season, with league matches against Cologne and Stuttgart to come before the DFB-Pokal final against Eintracht Frankfurt on May 19.
